Internet Guide 1995 |

Welcome to my piece of the web! I started spinning strands of the Web in 1995. Yes, that memorable year when Microsoft launched a million dollar show for it's long long awaited operating system. Two years before that, my undergrad problem was related to hypertext but I haven't heard about acronyms like HTML and HTTP although I had encountered some articles which mentioned SGML. In my study, I learned previous designs of hypertext systems in the 70s and 80s didn't have a standard data format. Moreover, some of the previous systems didn't utilize the network infrastructure so documents were usually accessed from just one central computer. But did you know that the concept of hypertext goes back from 1945? Vannebar Bush wrote an article entitled "As We May Think" about what he then called a memex in Atlantic Monthly . My special problem was entitled: "NoteCards for DOS: An Object-Oriented Hypertext Engine and Structure Editor". Thingamajig. Watchamacallit. Roughly translated today: a hypertext browser and editor rolled into one. What it basically can do are: load .PCX images , link one 'card' to another with a 'button', and display text in different fonts. I took me about two semesters to finish the project without my own PC and I'm grateful to this day that the LBCC was generous enough to lend me one of their trusty 286. That was 1994, the same year I got out of college to face the 'real world'. I was quite excited when Freddy of UPLB showed me the alpha version of Mosaic. But what really got me enticed about the Web was an article on Wired. It had a list of the editor's favorite home pages and had a nice article about Tim Berners-Lee of CERN and Marc Andressen and his gang at NCSA. In 1995 I managed to get myself a 486 DX2-66 with 4MB of RAM from my Christmas bonus at Louis Berger. I went home with an HTML editor called HTML Writer and tried my hand at Photoshop. Little did I know that I would be making a career (and an adventure) on the wild world of the web... Party On!
